The 1995 exhibits a healthy dark ruby/purple color, gobs of sweet black-cherry and cassis fruit, good ripeness, a plush texture, low acidity, and admirable length and richness in the finish. It should develop into a very good, possibly excellent, modestly-priced wine that will drink well for a decade. All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux.

1995 was better in St-Estèphe than in St-Julien. It was very dry so St-Estèphe benefited from the clay and better water provision. More undergrowth development and that bloody nose but with a firmness of tannin that is unexpected. Cabernet even a little minty. Fine and elegant. Not as long to go and not as concentrated as the 96 but more elegant. (JH)
