(essentially 55% merlot and 45% cabernet sauvignon, but with bits of petit verdot and cabernet franc) Good full medium ruby. Roasted but lively aromas of cassis, blackberry, bitter chocolate, game and tobacco. A moderately dense, persistent wine with good mid-palate sweetness and stuffing to support its tannins. Still, this slightly minty wine finishes a tad dry.

This lacks a little vigour and lift on the nose with faint aromas of cigar box and wild hedgerow. The palate is much better with good extraction, quite focused with good acidity and definition. Well-integrated new oak, expressive with a ripe, fairly tannic raspberry and tobacco finish with a hint of graphite. Gets better as it goes along, with an attractive, pert finish. Tasted October 2007.

Broad and rich and nuanced. At its peak now. Lots of bloody fruit. Very sweet, toasty and appetising. Perhaps not for the most fastidious purist but it certainly hits the spot for most. GV
