Chateau Figeac

Case Format: 75cl

Max score: 90

Chateau Figeac is a 40 hectares estate, located in the west of the Saint Emilion appellation. Its identity is defined by the vines used to produce the first wine, indeed, counter to other Saint Emilion producer, Figeac uses more Cabernet Sauvignon / Franc than Merlot. The annual production is around 120 000 bottles.

Deep ruby-red. Plum, mocha, chocolate, licorice, graphite and violet on the nose, plus a whiff of baked fruits. Suave and dry, with good energy to the bitter cherry, menthol and underbrush flavors. Very much a cabernet-dominated style. Finishes juicy and youthfully clenched, with firm, slightly dry tannins.

Tasted at the property, the 2004 Figeac has a very dark color for the vintage (so much so, if blind I might not guess it as a Bordeaux!). The nose is tightly wound with dense black fruit. It conveys the feeling of being a little "pushed," trying to transcend the limitations of the vintage and forsaking elegance and finesse. It feels a little monochromatic. The palate is better: quite weighty in the mouth with blackberry, raspberry coulis and a splash of soy, segueing into more tobacco-like notes towards the finish that offers plenty of freshness. This is a stout and sturdy Figeac, quite complex with an almost English ale-like sweetness noted on the finish. Two beverages for the price of one! Tasted June 2016.

Very dark crimson. Rather unexpectedly sweet on the nose. Very direct. Rather un-Figeac! I would have taken this for a modern St-Emilion blind! Very odd. Bit blustering. A bit primitive!
