Château Cantenac Brown is a 1855 classified third growth, located in Cantenac within the most prestigious Médoc appellation, Margaux. The vineyard was founded over 200 years ago by a Scotsman, John Lewis Brown. This visionary figure selected the best parcels of land: his hard work and high standards were rewarded in 1855 when the Bordeaux Classification ranked Cantenac Brown among the most esteemed wineyards. A spectacular testimony to its Scottish ancestry: the estate’s emblematic Tudor-style château makes it the most remarkable property in the Médoc region. It seals the estate with the Scottish stamp of Clan Brown and earns it its place in history for eternity. The soul of a great terroir, a radiant, full-bodied, velvety wine for keeping. It stands out by its fresh fruit flavours, its density and its very fine tannins. Its best vintages express freshness, an elegant bouquet of red and black fruits, with opulence and tension on the finish, and spicy undertones.

The 2009 Cantenac Brown does not quite deliver the complexity or breeding of the 2010 when compared directly, yet it is still attractive with strawberry and raspberry fruit, iodine and light marine scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine sappiness on the entry, spicier than the 2010, lively with just a little less precision displayed on the finish; notes of tea leaf and white pepper linger on the finish. This will drink sooner than the 2010 but should give 20-30 years drinking fulfilment. Tasted at the Cantenac Brown vertical at the chateau.

Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. One of the standout and perhaps most surprising showings was the performance of Cantenac-Brown '09. It has a more lifted, oaky bouquet with dark cherries, cassis and violets. It displays good precision with admirable purity. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet sappy entry. It is very primal compared to its peers, but it shows very good balance, whilst the finish is precise and silky smooth. This has more to give and so patience is required. Tasted January 2013.

Tasted blind. Dark glowing crimson. Sweet and round start and then correct and just drying a little bit on the end of the palate. Desperately needs food.
