The Château D’Issan is a flamboyant wine filled with a rich bouquet of aromatics. Formed on an ancient site, D’Issan is dripping in history, with records of the estate dating back to the 12th century, and a wine production that has continued for the past two centuries. Its soil is made up of multiple gravel mounds and 15m high alluvial hills which allows the ground to drain well and forces the vines to develop deep roots. This unusual terroir is what allows for Château D’Issan’s distinct characteristics. Its 52 hectares of vineyard comprises Cabernet Sauvignon (c.65%), Merlot (c.30%), Cabernet Franc (c.2%), Petit Verdot (c.2%) and Malbec (c.1%), with the vines averaging 35 years in age – with some older than 70. In turn, the combination of unusual terroir and exceptional methods in production has formed potent, silky textured wines that are some of the best in Margaux.

The 2012 d'Issan is dark and beautifully layered in the glass. Plum, creme de cassis, leather, herbs and cloves open up in in a silky, polished wine that impresses with its balance and overall poise. The d'Issan is a bit dark for Margaux, but that is a detail; the 2012 is a gorgeous wine in every way. The blend is 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot. This is terrific showing from d'Issan and winemaker Eric Boissenot.

The 2012 Chateau d'Issan, builds on the richness of the second wine and adds more body, structure and density. It has an inky purple color and a stunning nose of spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry fruit as well as touches of incense and graphite. Medium to full-bodied and stunningly concentrated, this 2012 is a great success in the vintage, one of the superstars. Moreover, its precociousness suggests it could be drunk in the next 4-5 years or cellared through 2025. I underrated this wine dramatically in my report of April, 2013 (Issue 206).

Tasted blind. Deep crimson. Some complexity on the mature nose. Strong cassis flavour. Still vigorous with lots of development still to come. Just a bit too tannic for the fruit.
