Nestled in the heart of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy, Coche-Dury's Monthelie is a testament to the winemaking mastery that has made this estate legendary in the world of Burgundian wine. This wine is crafted from Pinot Noir grapes, a noble variety that thrives in the terroir of Monthelie. The grapes are handpicked and vinified with meticulous care to capture the essence of this specific region. Following fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels, a process that imparts complexity and structure while allowing the unique characteristics of Monthelie's terroir to shine through. The aging period, which typically lasts around 12 months, nurtures the wine to its peak of flavour and texture. In your glass, Coche-Dury's Monthelie reveals its inviting garnet hue, enticing with aromas of red berries, violets, and subtle hints of forest underbrush. On the palate, it unfolds with elegance, showcasing a harmonious balance of vibrant acidity and a silky, refined texture. Flavors of wild strawberries, cherries, and a gentle earthiness dance gracefully, leading to a long and memorable finish. Coche-Dury's Monthelie is a masterpiece that embodies the essence of this charming corner of Burgundy. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for further maturation, this wine is an exquisite journey through the enchanting world of Burgundian Pinot Noir, showcasing the very soul of Monthelie.

Raphel Coche told me that the 2012 Corton Charlemagne was the only vineyard that escaped hail damage this year. It has a very succinct nose, not predisposed to go out and grab you by the lapels. The aromatics unfurl with a sense of ease prioritizing finesse over power: beeswax, linden, lemon thyme and fresh pear. The palate is exquisitely balanced with fleeting glimpses of Seville orange and apricot. But there is more about the tension, the effortlessness and that it just rolls out across the finish like a huge Turkish rug. This is the kind of wine that exhausts superlatives.
