2013 Chateau Giscours 3eme Cru Classe, Margaux 12x75cl

Chateau Giscours

Case Format: 75cl

Max score: 88-91

Located in the Margaux appellation of the Bordeaux region, Château Giscours is a Troisième Grand Cru Classé. The component of its terroir, a mild climate and barrel ageing hold the secrets of this fine wine. Cabernet Sauvignon represents 60% of the vineyard and Merlot 32%, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc compose the remaining 8%. The Château Giscours is an elegant, well-structured wine with bright aromas and luscious, silky tannins. To the Château, wine does not stand alone, but is a representation of its environment. Benefitting from Margaux’s excellent terroir, Château Giscours vineyard’s sit above dry, gravelly hilltops. In turn, this well-balanced, rich wine, is one that will develop beautifully for years to come.

Bright ruby-red. Enticing aromas of minty redcurrant, blueberry, cedar and graphite. Juicy and fresh in the mouth, with red and dark berry flavors lifted by harmonious acidity. Finishes with slightly peppery, youthful tannins and a lingering violet note.

Tasted at the Chateau Giscours vertical, the 2013 Chateau Giscours is conspicuously lighter in color than either the 2012 or 2014. Those red cherries and fresh strawberry fruit are intact after bottling, not complex, but clean and fresh, now accompanied by a black olive tincture. The palate is medium-bodied with a pointed, angular opening and it feels a little hollow thereafter. As I (rather glibly) commented in my barrel report, it stumbles over the finish line and that is still the case. It will be an early-drinking Giscours that should be consumed within the first ten years. Tasted June 2015.

Tasted blind. Mid garnet. Fresh dark fruit, nicely aromatic, some tea leaf. Juicy and finely textured. Very nice balance and elegant. Scented to the end. (JH)
