Geyserville is a traditional field blend of Zinfandel and its complementary varieties: Carignan, Petite Syrah, and Mataro (Mourvedre). Each vintage is unique, distinct, extraordinary… yet they do have elements in common, including the blackest of blackberry fruit, ripe plum, rich cherry, and cedar. A remarkably consistent and elegant wine with exceptional layering, Geyserville’s unique flavour characteristics are often attributed to the relatively higher percentage of Carignan, added to the Petite Syrah found in most of our other Zinfandels. Among the most age-worthy of Ridge wines, Geyserville often drinks beautifully well beyond 10 years of age. Ripe cranberry and cassis on the nose. Focused dark bramble fruit on the palate, layered with cocoa and clove. Vibrant acidity balances beautifully with opulent fruit and carries through to a long and elegant finish. Geyserville is home to the oldest vines at Ridge. The “Old Patch” section of the vineyard contains vines that are more than 130 years of age. Old vines contribute an intensity and complexity of flavour to the wine that cannot be replicated by any other method.

The 2014 Monte Bello is going to need at least a decade to show everything it has. Deceptively medium in body and super-classic in its mid-weight structure, the 2014 offers notable brightness and intensity in an understated style, even by Ridge standards. Today, the 2014 is intensely linear, focused and vibrant. Petit Verdot is the variety that suffered most in the drought, so its presence in the blend is minimal.

"A worthy successor to the profound 2013 and the fruit of the earliest harvest on record at this address, the 2014 Monte Bello is still quite youthfully expressive, wafting from the glass with an exuberant bouquet of minty dark berries, plums, black cherries, cigar box and a nicely integrated framing of new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and intense, with a rich chassis of structuring tannins, which are currently largely concealed in a succulent core of fruit, and bright balancing acids. In profile, it's structurally more open-knit and giving than the massive 2013, and I suspect it will reach its plateau sooner, but it should enjoy over three decades of longevity. The blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, and it attained 13.5% natural alcohol. ""The drought had a positive effect on concentration,"" observed winemaker Eric Baugher when we corresponded shortly after harvest, adding that ""the wines are opaque in color, with rich tannins and marvellous fruit."" Four years later, that remains an accurate characterization of the 2014 Monte Bello."

A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. 100% destemmed but not crushed. Fermented with ambient yeasts. Spent 16 months in 97% American oak, 2% French oak and 1% Hungarian oak, all of it 100% new. Filtered before bottling. Very dark garnet. Smells of cassis, coconut and green herbs. Gorgeously smooth flavours of cherry, cassis and green herbs are tinged with the coconut and whisky-barrel scents of American oak. Amazingly supple, fine-grained tannins and fantastic acidity make this wine, as usual, quite regal. Still a baby, this wine will reward at least ten more years of cellaring. Outstanding. (AY)
