The 2016 Les Forts de Latour has an outstanding nose: blackberry, graphite and violet scents, with the oak seamlessly enmeshed, very focused and poised. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit, tobacco and black pepper. Impressive precision towards the finish, this is a sophisticated Pauillac that will go the course. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

The 2016 Les Forts de Latour is superb, unwinding in the glass with notions of blackcurrants, wild berries, sweet loamy soil, cigar wrapper and English walnuts. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's concentrated and tightly wound, with superb depth at the core, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins. This is an impeccably balanced, utterly classical Forts de Latour worth a special effort to seek out.

Tasted blind. Not the freshest nose. Spearmint and damp fur. Then quite cool on the palate. And lots of tannin on the rather pinched, drying finish. Very youthful! Needs a lot of time. (JR)
