CRITIC REVIEWS

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a perfumed nose, perhaps a little worked in the winery, but the fruit is pure and the new oak nicely integrated. Opulent, yet controlled. The palate is medium-bodied with a little hardness to the tannins, quite a worked mixture of red and black fruit that segues into a compact, tannic finish that needs a more flesh to balance it out. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Revisited in bottle, the 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is showing very well, unwinding in the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of red cherries, raspberries, sweet soil tones and warm spices. Full-bodied, muscular and tightly wound, with lively acids and prodigious reserves of fine, chalky tannins, this is a serious, structured Clos Vougeot unapologetically built for the long haul. For the patient, everything suggests there's considerable upside, but this is not a wine to "pop and pour" any time in the next decade.

Domaine Louis Jadot own 2.6 ha of Clos de Vougeot purchased in the 1980s, with a further 0.69 ha on long-term contracts. Medium deep ruby, with a spicy, dark-fruited nose of black cherry and nutmeg. The palate is sappy, layered and complex. The tannins are succulent, ripe and fine-grained, adding depth without bitterness. Peppery and toasty on the finish. (TP)
