The story began with Michel Chapoutier, a unique man with a thirst for knowledge, definitely one of a kind. Michel is open-minded and always willing to learn. He seeks to discover and reflect the full potential of his terroirs and let the soils express their true character. That which gives the wines their signature style. This now forms the basis of the M. CHAPOUTIER ethos and their team strives to reveal the very best of what the soils have to offer. Hermitage, De l'Oree is an intense golden yellow, with hints of green and gold wine. Very intense on the nose, with hot shingles, toffee, very ripe, fruity lemon with floral overtones of acacia and hawthorn. On the palate it has a well-rounded start, full bodied, very complex with overtones of ripe fruits, spices and roasting. Very long in the mouth, with a fresh final note.

Inky ruby. Powerful, mineral-accented blueberry, kirsch, cassis and vanilla aromas are complemented by suggestions of succulent flowers, allspice, smoky bacon and incense. Coats the palate with alluringly sweet, finely etched black and blue fruit preserve, spicecake, mocha, olive paste and violet pastille flavors that are underscored by a vein of smoky minerality. Shows outstanding energy for its brawn and finishes impressively long, smoky and broad, with mounting tannins and gentle closing grip. 50% new oak.

As usual, Chapoutier's 2018 Ermitage l'Ermite is a standout among standouts. Crushed stone, blueberries, even a touch of herb feature on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is cool and crunchy but also ripe and generous. It's rich and long, with a firm, granitic structure that should enable two-plus decades of aging. This has it all.

Full bottle 1,391 g. Certified organic and biodynamic. Chapoutier's oldest Marsanne vines planted round the famous chapel at the top of the hill of Hermitage on granite. Barrel fermented slowly at 18 to 20 C after a light cold-settling. Then matured on lees with regular stirring for 10 to 12 months. Pale honey colour. Very high toned with mineral notes (because of the granite?) with a note of meatiness rather than the obvious honey of its stablemates. Then massively intersting on the palate with more lift, spine and tension than de l'Oree and Le Meal 2018. It's even a bit racy. Really exciting wine! (JR)
