There is a little more ripeness in the 2019 Don Melchor, which in warmer years shows notes of ripe plums and is subtly balsamic. The palate is round and powerful, with good balance and nice integration of the oak. As usual, there is a combination of elegance and power, with subtle mintiness and harmony. 156,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in December 2020.

92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot. Hand-harvested between 18 March and 9 May. Each block vinified separately in stainless steel. Fermentations lasting 8-10 days at 25-26 C with 4-6 pumpovers per day. Extended maceration for 8-10 days at 23-25 C. 15 months in 72% new, 28% second-use French oak. pH 3.65.Intense rich black fruits on the nose, dense with spicy oak and a touch of vanilla. Having just seen the 2010, this needs some time and that oak will integrate seamlessly. Ripe and round with a touch of fresh pyrazine and a firm acid backbone. This will be even more delightful in a few years. (SCJ)
