CRITIC REVIEWS

The 2020 Beaumont offers plenty of blackcurrant and raspberry fruit on the nose, intermixed with cedar and subtle pencil shaving scents-discrete, but it opens with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and a bit chewy with sappy red fruit. The finish "fluffs its lines" and comes across as rather simple, especially in contrast to its appealing aromatics. A recent 2016 showed better than this bottle, hence the question mark against my score. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 Beaumont opens with expressive notions of baked red cherries, mulberries and redcurrant jelly, plus hints of dried mint, pencil shavings and charcoal. The medium-bodied palate delivers a good amount of crunchy red fruits with soft tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with an herbal lift.

Tasted blind. Deeply coloured. Leafy black fruit. Pretty lightweight, tannins well judged not to overwhelm the fruit but could do with a little more substance. Should be approachable early. I went back to this to retaste it and upped my score by half a point as I felt I had been too hard. (JH)
