2025 Chateau Montrose 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Estephe 6x75cl

Chateau Montrose

Case Format: 75cl

Max score: 95-97

Drink To: 2035-2065

Known for its powerful, full-bodied claret, Château Montrose has continued to create acclaimed wines for the past couple of centuries. Only 800 metres from the Gironde estuary, Montrose benefits from an excellent microclimate that protects the vineyards against the frost. Their terroir comprises deep clay-gravel soils which enables the vines – which comprise Cabernet Sauvignon (c.60%), Merlot (c.32%), Cabernet Franc (c.6%) and Petit Verdot (c.2%) – to thrive. The resulting wine is one that is powerful and refined, yet elegant and complex. Firm and tannic, Montrose has superb ageing potential that with bottle maturation will continue to develop into a sublime and poetic claret.

CRITIC REVIEWS

Antonio Galloni

The 2025 Montrose is a very quiet, sophisticated Montrose. Silky tannins, lifted aromatics and mid-weight structure are the signatures. Time in the glass brings out lovely red-toned fruit character, along with hints of spice, blood orange, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco. It will be interesting to see how the 2025 develops with elevage. Today, it is a bit on the lighter side relative to the norm here. Some of that may be attributable to winemaking.

77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc. Now 100% from the Terrace No. 4 vineyards. Cask sample.Already quite expressive. Pure and fragrant with blackcurrant, graphite and cedar notes. Lovely silky texture on attack, a touch of mid-palate sweetness then ripe, punchy, gravely tannins on the finish. Lots of freshness and length. Very St-Estephe. (JL)
